When Abigail Adams died late in 1818, her husband John, the second president of the United States, received a letter of condolence from his successor, Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson advised Adams that “time and silence" were the only medicines for his grief, and closed by saying, "God bless you and support you under your heavy affliction.”
